Getting the perfect, salon-like blowout can be a struggle—and a fitness feat. Holding a hair dryer in one hand, a barrel brush in the other, all while trying not to burn your strands gets tiring. While the best hair dryer is still great to have in your beauty cabinet, the best hair dryer brush simplifies an at-home blowout with a fraction of the tools.
Meet the experts: Shann Christen, celebrity hair stylist and trichologist based in Beverly Hills and Janiene Luke, M.D., board-certified dermatologist in Loma Linda, CA.
“One way we can mimic the result we get in a salon is with the hair dryer brush—a flat or round brush merged with a blow dryer,” explains Shann Christen, celebrity hairstylist and trichologist based in Beverly Hills, who notes that handling both a traditional hair dryer and brush at once is difficult for most people. “Merging the brush and the dryer seems to make it a bit easier to navigate.”
Our top picks
Since many find these tools easier to use (and less tiring on the hands) and often lead to less tangling, they are generally considered less damaging to the hair than a traditional at-home blow drier, according to Christen. However, they don’t come without risk. Hair dryer brushes may contribute to heat damage and strand breakage. “Even a great tool can be damaging when misused or overused,” he explains.
But, when used correctly and with the right products, this brush-meet-dryer can be a powerful tool. Ahead, we’ve rounded up the best hair dryer brushes for your best hair day yet.

amika Hair Blow Dryer Brush 2.0
Pros
- Earned top marks for volumizing
- Gentle heat
- Suitable for all hair types
Cons
- No cool setting
This hair dryer brush from Amika offers a simple way to get a salon-level blowout. Tested by the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, all testers agreed that the brush was best for achieving volume and perfect style on all hair types. Testers also found that it offered a pro-level blow dry while aiding hair’s fullness, all with gentle heat. “I also liked that they use two types of bristles (short and long) as it grabbed the strands of hair and glided through,” one tester said. Plus, it has a long cord for easy use and was the quietest hair dryer brush tested by the Beauty Lab. However, it doesn’t have a cool setting for locking in styles.

Best Lightweight Hair Dryer Brush
StyleCraft Hot Body Ionic 2-in-1 Blowout Hot Air Brush
Pros
- Earned top scores for making hair appear shiny
- Received high scores for leaving hair looking frizz-free
- Fairly lightweight
Cons
- No cool shot
- Controls can be difficult
According to the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Beauty Lab tests, this brush earned the highest scores for leaving strands with a shiny and frizz-free look. The brush features mixed pattern bristles to give hair height and body; the longer plastic bristles detangle while the shorter, bushier bristles smooth and help with shine. Of all the brushes tested by the Beauty Lab, it’s one of the lightest-weight dryer brushes, weighing only 1.3 pounds with the cord, meaning less weight on your arms. But, use on partially dried hair and alongside heat protectant, as this tool got the hottest during Beauty Lab testing. Testers found there was a bit of a learning curve when it came to understanding and maneuvering this tool.

How to choose the best hair dryer brush
✔️Consider the material. Christen recommends looking at the composition of the barrel and bristles of the hair dryer brush before purchasing. He prefers the surface of the tool to be made of a material that promotes even heating, such as ceramic or gold plating, for faster styling and less damage. A multi-bristle tool is also preferable, Christen explains, noting that longer, smoother bristles with protective tips aid in detangling the hair, while shorter, tufted bristles (usually made from Boar hair) help grip and smooth strands.
✔️Go for adjustable heat. “I look for a variable heat setting. Too often we work too hot with our tools,” Christen explains. “Being able to adjust the heat settings is a plus.” Taking advantage of custom temperature control also aids with finding the best temperature for you, which may help decrease the chances of hair damage.
✔️Look for ionic technology. You may have heard of ionic technology before, and Christen explains that this feature is a major plus for hot tools, especially hair dryer brushes. “Ions are so beneficial in the styling process to prevent frizz and promote a smooth surface to the hair shaft,” he explains.
How to protect hair from heat damage
✔️Keep hair health in mind. To “minimize cumulative damage over time,” Dr. Luke recommends decreasing the frequency of use, using the lowest heat setting possible, detangling the hair before use, and holding the blow dryer farther away from the hair.
✔️Use the right products before styling. According to Dr. Luke, using a heat protectant before styling is another crucial step to avoid damage. Additionally, using a deep conditioner in the shower before adding heat can help strengthen the hair and aid with styling.
✔️Don’t begin with hair that’s too wet. Using a hair dryer brush with hair that is too wet, like when you’ve just gotten out of the shower, can be a bit overwhelming and can lead to misuse, explains Christen. “For these stylers, it’s a good idea to air dry the hair to a damp state before tackling the round brush feature. Then, it becomes a lot easier for the brush to go through the hair and create a good style.”

Do hair dryer brushes damage the hair?
There are two ways that your hair can become damaged: Chemically (bleaching, dyeing, perming) and physically (friction, heat exposure), says Dr. Luke, who points to research that found an association with blow drying and damage to the hair, noting that damage increased with higher temperatures.
However, Christen notes that these two-in-one tools are usually better for maintaining hair health as they tend to create less tangling, but can still cause damage and breakage if overused or used incorrectly.
And while these types of tools are suitable for use on all hair types, “Those with curly or textured hair should make sure to thoroughly detangle their hair prior to using a blow-drying brush to avoid damage or breakage that may come if the hair gets caught in the bristles,” explains Dr. Luke.
